Kinugawa Onsen Station is the main gateway to Kinugawa Onsen and one of the most useful transport hubs for exploring the Nikko area.
If you arrive from Tokyo, this is where you can connect to hotels, Edo Wonderland, Kinugawa Ropeway, Tobu World Square, central Nikko, and other parts of the Kinugawa valley. The station also has coin lockers, a tourist information center, taxis and a free footbath just outside.

Kinugawa Onsen Station is operated by Tobu Railway and has coin lockers, elevators, escalators, a waiting room and an accessible toilet.
Getting to Kinugawa Onsen Station From Tokyo
For most visitors, the easiest starting point is Tobu Asakusa Station.
Some Tobu limited express trains run directly from Asakusa toward Kinugawa Onsen, with a journey of roughly two hours. Other services require a change at Shimo-Imaichi before continuing along the Tobu Kinugawa Line.
There are also direct limited express services from the Shinjuku and Ikebukuro side of Tokyo. Tobu lists the journey from this side of Tokyo at around two hours, although these JR-connected services are not covered by the NIKKO PASS.

What to Do When You Arrive at Kinugawa Onsen Station
Do not rush out of the station immediately.
If you have not already planned your transport, first check whether your hotel is close enough to walk or whether you should take the hotel bus. If you are heading directly to an attraction such as Edo Wonderland, go to the bus area outside the station.
Travelers carrying luggage can also use the station’s coin lockers before exploring the area. Tobu confirms that coin lockers are available at Kinugawa Onsen Station, although locker availability can naturally vary during busy periods.
Kinugawa Onsen Station Tourist Center
There is a tourist information center at Kinugawa Onsen Station, and it is worth knowing about if your plans are not completely fixed.
The center provides local sightseeing information and can help with bus tickets, theme-park tickets, accommodation, tours and chartered taxis. Tobu currently lists its opening hours as 8:50am to 4:50pm, although hours can change.
This can be especially useful if you arrive without having booked every part of your Kinugawa trip in advance.
Are There Coin Lockers at Kinugawa Onsen Station?
Yes, Kinugawa Onsen Station has coin lockers. If the lockers inside the station are full, check outside as well. There are additional lockers just in front of the bus stop.
They are useful if you arrive before hotel check-in or want to visit an attraction before collecting your luggage later.
I would not depend on finding a large empty locker during particularly busy weekends or autumn foliage season. If you are staying overnight, another option is to ask your hotel whether it can store your luggage before check-in.
How to Get From Kinugawa Onsen Station to Your Hotel
This is one of the most useful services at the station.
Nikko Kotsu operates a hotel circulator connecting Kinugawa Onsen Station with many hotels and ryokan around the resort. The bus leaves from bus stop No. 5 outside the station and serves properties throughout the Kinugawa Onsen area.
The current Japanese timetable lists the fare as ¥300 one way. When boarding from the station, tell the driver which hotel you are going to. For the return journey, ask the front desk at your hotel about the bus back to the station.
This service is particularly useful for hotels farther from the station.
For example, Asaya Hotel is around a 30-minute walk away, so taking the hotel bus is much easier with luggage. Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel, by comparison, is only around three minutes from the station on foot.

Bus From Kinugawa Onsen Station to Edo Wonderland
Kinugawa Onsen Station is also one of the easiest places to start a trip to Edo Wonderland.
Buses for Edo Wonderland leave from the station and travel via Tobu World Square. Tobu gives the journey to Tobu World Square at about five minutes and the full journey toward Edo Wonderland at roughly 20–25 minutes depending on the service.
Edo Wonderland’s own access information directs passengers to bus stop No. 3 at Kinugawa Onsen Station. It lists the bus journey at about 15 minutes and a taxi at around 10 minutes.

How to Get From Kinugawa Onsen Station to Nikko
Central Nikko is surprisingly close.
Take the Tobu Kinugawa Line from Kinugawa Onsen to Shimo-Imaichi and change there for a Tobu Nikko Line train to Tobu Nikko Station.
Tobu gives the journey at about 35 minutes.
The transfer at Shimo-Imaichi is straightforward, so there is no need to move hotels just because you want to spend a day visiting Toshogu Shrine and central Nikko.

Kinugawa Onsen Station to Tobu World Square
Tobu World Square is one of the easiest major attractions to reach from the station.
There is a dedicated Tobu World Square railway station just south of Kinugawa Onsen, and buses from Kinugawa Onsen Station also stop at the attraction. Tobu’s bus information gives the journey at around five minutes.
This makes Tobu World Square easy to visit either before hotel check-in or on the morning you leave Kinugawa.
The Free Footbath Outside Kinugawa Onsen Station
One of the nicest features of Kinugawa Onsen Station is immediately outside the building.
Kinuta no Yu is a free public footbath in the station square. According to Nikko’s official tourism site, it is normally open from 9:00am until 6:00pm and uses alkaline simple hot-spring water.
It is a good place to sit for a few minutes after arriving from Tokyo or while waiting for your train home.
There is also a small hand bath, so you do not necessarily need to remove your shoes to try the hot-spring water.
Watch the SL Taiju Turn Around
Kinugawa Onsen Station has something unusual that even travelers who are not railway enthusiasts may enjoy.
A railway turntable sits in the station square. On SL Taiju operating days, the steam locomotive can be turned there before its next journey.
It is fun to watch the turntable from the station as the locomotive turns.
The railway publishes separate SL Taiju operating dates and turntable times. On operating days, the locomotive may arrive at the turntable shortly after reaching Kinugawa Onsen Station.
If your timing happens to match, it is worth spending a few extra minutes at the station rather than walking straight to your hotel.
Can You Walk From Kinugawa Onsen Station to Your Hotel?
In many cases, yes.
Some of the most convenient hotels are only a few minutes away. Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel and Nikko Kinugawa Hotel Mikazuki are around three minutes from the station, while Nanaeyae is about five minutes away.
Other hotels are farther along the valley. Walking to Asaya, for example, takes roughly 30 minutes, which is not ideal with luggage.
Before booking a hotel, check the walking distance rather than simply seeing that the address says “Kinugawa Onsen.” The resort stretches along the river, and properties can be much farther from the station than they appear on a general map.
Do You Need a Car in Kinugawa Onsen?
Not necessarily.
If you arrive by train, you can reach many of the main hotels by walking or using the hotel circulator bus. Edo Wonderland and Tobu World Square are accessible by public transport, and Nikko can be reached easily by train.
A car becomes more useful if you plan to explore remote areas beyond the main Kinugawa and Nikko transport routes.
For a normal one- or two-night stay focused on onsen, Nikko and the major attractions, public transport is usually enough.
Is Kinugawa Onsen Station Easy for Travelers With Luggage?
Yes, compared with many smaller rural stations.
Tobu lists elevators, escalators, a waiting room, coin lockers and an accessible toilet among the station facilities.
The main challenge is not the station itself but the distance to your accommodation. If your hotel is more than about ten minutes away on foot, I would check the hotel circulator before deciding to walk with a suitcase.
How Early Should You Arrive Before Your Train?
For an ordinary Tobu train, arriving around 10–15 minutes before departure is usually enough if you already know your platform and have your ticket or IC card(Pasmor Card or Suica Card) ready.
For a limited express with a reserved seat, I prefer arriving a little earlier. It gives you time to find the correct platform, buy anything you need and avoid rushing through an unfamiliar station.
If the SL Taiju is operating that day, you may want even more time so you can watch the locomotive and turntable outside.
Is Kinugawa Onsen Station Worth Visiting?
It can be.
The station square has the free footbath and the SL turntable, and it is a useful starting point for buses around the area. It also gives you a convenient central point when exploring Kinugawa Onsen on foot.
But I would not treat the station itself as a major sightseeing attraction. Its value is that it connects almost everything else.
Practical Tips for Kinugawa Onsen Station
Kinugawa Onsen Station is small enough to be easy to understand but important enough to have the facilities most travelers need.
If you arrive from Tokyo, check your hotel distance before walking away from the station. Use the hotel circulator if your ryokan is farther along the valley, store your luggage in a locker if you want to start sightseeing immediately, and visit the tourist center if you need help with buses or attractions.
For Edo Wonderland, buses leave directly from the station. For Nikko, take the train through Shimo-Imaichi. And if you have a few spare minutes before leaving, the free footbath and SL turntable make waiting for your train much more enjoyable.
That is what makes Kinugawa Onsen Station more than simply a place to get off the train: it is the transport hub that connects most of a Kinugawa Onsen trip.
