For most visitors, I recommend the train because it runs more frequently and works every day.
How to Take the Train From Kinugawa Onsen to Nikko
The normal route is:
Kinugawa Onsen Station → Shimo-Imaichi Station → Tobu Nikko Station.
Take the Tobu Kinugawa Line from Kinugawa Onsen toward Shimo-Imaichi. At Shimo-Imaichi, change to the Tobu Nikko Line for Tobu Nikko Station.
The transfer is easy. Shimo-Imaichi is much smaller than a major Tokyo station, and signs clearly show trains for Tobu Nikko. You stay inside the station and simply move to the correct platform.
Regular trains are all you need for this trip, so there is usually no reason to pay extra for a limited express.
How Much Does the Train Cost?
The regular one-way fare between Kinugawa Onsen and Tobu Nikko is ¥330.
Suica, PASMO, and other compatible Japanese transportation IC cards can be used on Tobu trains, so you do not need to buy a separate paper ticket if you already have an IC card.
If you are traveling with a NIKKO PASS, the railway section between Shimo-Imaichi, Tobu Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen is included. This can be useful if you are combining Tokyo, Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen in the same trip.
Is There a Direct Train From Kinugawa Onsen to Nikko?
Most regular connections require one change at Shimo-Imaichi because the railway branches toward Tobu Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen from there.
The transfer is short and straightforward, so I would not spend extra time trying to find a direct service. Simply choose a convenient departure from Kinugawa Onsen and follow the connection shown for Tobu Nikko.
Can You Take a Direct Bus From Kinugawa Onsen to Nikko?
Yes. Tobu Bus operates a direct route between Kinugawa Onsen Station and Tobu Nikko Station on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.
Under the current 2026 schedule, the fare from Kinugawa Onsen Station to Tobu Nikko Station is ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for children. The bus also continues toward Shinkyo and the World Heritage area, which can save you another transfer after reaching Nikko.
This makes the bus particularly convenient if your first destination is Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple or Futarasan Shrine.
The disadvantage is frequency. Unlike the train, the direct bus has limited departures, so check the current timetable before planning your day around it.
Train or Bus: Which Is Better?
Take the train if you want the easiest and most flexible option. It is cheaper, frequent and available every day.
Take the direct bus if you are traveling on a weekend or national holiday and the timetable works for you. It is especially useful if you want to continue directly toward the World Heritage sites instead of changing to another bus at Tobu Nikko Station.
For most travelers, the train is still the better choice.
How to Get From Tobu Nikko Station to Toshogu Shrine
Tobu Nikko Station is not directly beside Toshogu Shrine. From the station, you can either take a local Tobu bus or walk.
The bus is the quickest option. Buses run from the station toward Shinkyo and the World Heritage area, with useful stops including Shinkyo, Omotesando and Nishi-sando.
Walking takes roughly 25–30 minutes, depending on where you are going. The route follows Nikko’s main street past shops, restaurants and cafés, so it can be enjoyable in good weather.
A practical plan is to take the bus uphill toward the shrines and walk back toward the station later.
Tobu Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station?
If you are coming from Kinugawa Onsen, use Tobu Nikko Station.
Both Kinugawa Onsen and Tobu Nikko are on the Tobu railway network, making this the simplest route. JR Nikko Station is nearby, but there is no advantage in changing to JR for this journey.
Can You Visit Nikko as a Day Trip From Kinugawa Onsen?
Yes. Kinugawa Onsen works very well as a base for visiting central Nikko.
If you leave after breakfast, you can reach Tobu Nikko in about half an hour and spend most of the day visiting Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan Shrine and Shinkyo Bridge. You can then return to Kinugawa Onsen before dinner and enjoy your hotel or ryokan onsen in the evening.
This is particularly convenient if you stay two nights in Kinugawa Onsen because you do not have to move your luggage between hotels.
What Time Should You Leave Kinugawa Onsen?
For a full sightseeing day, leaving between 8:00am and 9:00am works well.
You can still enjoy breakfast at your hotel and reach Nikko early enough for the major temples and shrines. Starting earlier is useful during weekends, national holidays and the autumn foliage season, when Nikko can become very busy.
Always check that day’s train timetable before leaving, since connections at Shimo-Imaichi can affect the total journey time.
Should You Stay in Kinugawa Onsen or Nikko?
Stay in Kinugawa Onsen if you want the hot-spring experience. The area has a much larger choice of onsen hotels, traditional ryokan, private baths and riverside accommodation.
Stay in central Nikko if your main goal is reaching Toshogu Shrine and the surrounding World Heritage sites as early as possible.

For many travelers, the best combination is simple: explore Nikko during the day and stay in Kinugawa Onsen at night.
