This reclaimed landfill Tokyo Bay Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome, run by Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association, is one of the famous tourist spots in Tokyo.

Location:

Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome is a part of Yumenoshima Park of  Yumenoshima landfill, Koto Ward, Tokyo. This combined three-dome two-story greenhouse is full of nature with tropical plants, one of Japan’s best greenhouse domes.

Local people call it, ‘Yumenoshima Nettai Shokubutsukan.’ However, this botanical garden is also famous as Yumenoshima Tropical Plant Dome to foreign visitors.

15 minutes walk from Shin-Kiba Station.

History:

Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome was established in November 1988, where the temperature is computer controlled at around 15°C.

The greenhouse is built of three domes linked together. The three giant domes look like the sails of a sailboat from far. The greenhouse is about 1,500 m2, with about 30 meters in height.

It’s worth mentioning that the whole of Yumenoshima is reclaimed land made up of landfill from waste materials like Odaiba and Toyosu.

But Odaiba is built for tourism purposes, making tourist attractions like amusement centers, shopping malls, Gundam Statue, and Liberty Statue. On the other hand, Yumenoshima is for local needs such as a harbor and stadiums.

Three Combined Dome:

The greenhouse dome is combined with three round-shaped domes and divided into A, B, and C.

Every dome specializes in different plants.

Suppose, A dome specializes in rain forests. It has waterfalls, Wild Edible Roots, Heliconia flowers, Orchids, and ferns.

B dome displays a mixed tropical village that contains tropical and semitropical plants.

However, the C dome represents a vegetation zone that specializes in the vegetation of the Ogasawara islands.

One of the sections not to miss here is the small carnivorous plant section. This small carnivorous plant room can teach about the plant.

Brief Overview:

The purpose of the Dome is to educate people more about tropical plants and study such valuable plants.

Southeast Asia, the Amazon Basin, and the Congo Basin in Africa are the world’s three most famous tropical rainforests.

Interestingly, visitors can see about 1,000 such tropical rainforest plants in the greenhouse, telling the story of plant life and its coexistence with humans.

Colorful flowers and fruit create unique scenery. The beautiful tropical environment attracts many visitors throughout the year.

Besides, visitors can enjoy boats floating at a yacht harbor from the north side of the Dome’s balcony. On a sunny day, the dock is fantastic.

Tokyo’s tallest tower Tokyo Skytree can be seen clearly over the harbor.

The most exciting spot that immediately impresses tourists is a lovely flower map near the entrance. The map clearly tells the surrounding area of the greenhouse.

After passing Event Hall is Exhibition Hall. Several plants and sea creatures are displayed here.

Moreover, it is a good learning room for all kids and adults. Most of the materials are natural, not photographs.

Kids love playing and taking photos here. Therefore, parents get a chance to take photos of their kids.

Waterfall:

There are waterfalls and a pond with floating lovely lilies, which can be seen enjoying a cup of coffee from the cafe.

However, tourists can enjoy one of the waterfalls from near. The path is under the waterfall.

The waterfall and pond are surrounded by tree fern, Barringtonia, and mangroves waterside plants.

Long Palm:

There are some kinds of beautiful palms, including Alexander and Royal palms, whose leaves almost touch the Dome’s high ceiling.

The Ogasawara Islands are located in the North-Western Pacific Ocean about 1,000 km south of the central Japanese Archipelago.

It is 30 islands clustered in three groups and covers a surface area of 7,939 hectares.

Some famous plants worth mentioning include Schima mertensiana, Pandanaceae, Pacific beauty palm, etc.

Events:

The Greenhouse Dome holds several small events every year for kids and students. However, it also holds some events which are not very popular in Japan, like Halloween in October.

Over 50 large punkins are placed to celebrate Halloween in front of the dome from October first week until October 31, where kids can enjoy and play with punkins.

Surroundings:

The dome is one of the parts of Yuminashima Park. So, it has beautiful surroundings.

The backside of the dome is Yumenoshima floating harbor, and the front side is Yumenoshima Park Archery Field and BumB.

There are flower trees, benches, statues, and green lawns behind the Archery Field where visitors can enjoy their time.

BumB is a spot where the player can take their meals. However, it’s open to the public too.
