Sumida Aquarium is one of the best indoor aquariums in Tokyo to enjoy marine life, where visitors can enjoy the feeling of the breath of living sea creatures in close proximity. The aquarium is beautifully designed, with natural aquatic plants holding 10,000 aquatic living creatures.

You can use Tokyo Metro subway Toei Asakusa Line from Haneda Airport or Narita Airport. However, if you wish to use a rental car, you can find several car rentals company in the airport transfers lobby.

 Location:

Sumida Aquarium( Sumida Suizokukan) is on the 5th & 6th floors of the Tokyo Solamachi Commercial Complex in Tokyo Solamachi Town, Sumida City, Tokyo. However, Tokyo Solamachi Town is also famous as Tokyo Skytree Town.

The aquarium is in the West Zone of Tokyo Skytree Town on the 5-6 floors with 7140m2 space, holding about 700 tons of water. It uses artificial seawater.

It’s close to Tokyo Metro Oshiage Station. In addition, people from Narita Airport and Haneda Airport can use Toei Asakusa Line to access Tokyo Skytree Solamachi Town.

History:

Sumida Aquarium was opened to the public at the same time as Tokyo Skytree in 2012.

Orix Corporation is a company that operates worldwide with several projects, including financial services, rental operations, real estate, etc., made Sumida Aquarium aiming to provide visitors’ beauty of aquatic environments.’

Amano Takashi, the founder of Nature Aquarium, created Freshwater Nature Aquariums at the entrance of the Sumida Aquarium Tokyo, offering a pleasant experience of a freshwater aquatic lifestyle.

What to see?

It’s one of the most famous aquariums in Tokyo. So, many things to see here, like Jellyfish, Goldfish, Garden Eels, Penguin Pool Coral Reefs, etc.

Entrance:

If you enter Tokyo Skytree Solamachi Town from Mizumachi, use the lift to the fourth floor. Then, go out and find Sumida Aquarium by Orix.

You can use the escalator or stairs to the fifth floor. Buy a ticket and go inside.

You can use a lift or a stair here. But the stair looks dark. So, watch your steps, and you’ll arrive at Natural Aquascape.

Natural Aquascape:

Natural Aquascapes are lovely. Freshwater aquatics live here created by famous photographer, author, and founder of Aqua Design, Amano Takashi.

You can see Amano Shrimps at the left tank. These cute freshwater shrimps were named after Amano Takashi.

Besides, you can see other freshwater fishes in this section and remember the designer, Amano, for his outstanding contribution to the world.

Big Petri Dish:

Visitors become amazed when they arrive at Jellyfish Tank. It’s a Big Petri Dish Tank that displays the drifting and fluffy lifestyle of ‘Jellyfish.’ which is like a dreamlike sight of the jellyfish world.

The aquarium installed Big Petri Dish Tank in 2020. No wonder installation of this tank brought a new highlight of the aquarium’s Jellyfish aquatic life.

At the same time, visitors can stand above the illuminated Petri Dish Tank and watch how lovely jellyfish sway gently in the water. Most likely, Jellyfish swaying is like floating stars in the sky gently. It’s really a dreamy feeling.

Moreover, Jellyfish lovers get crowded during Halloween. Halloween Theme is displayed on the walls during the Halloween making the atmosphere creepy, turning swaying Jellyfish into like lightning ghosts.

Ogasawara Tank:

Water’s Blessing Ogasawara Tank (Ogasawara Sea Tank) is one of the aquarium’s main attractions, representing the habitats of the Ogasawara Islands, Izu Islands, and Tokyo Bay.

It’s 20 feet deep, and beautiful sea creatures swim here. Giant Sand Tiger sharks, Rays, and other lovely fishes offer visitors an unforgettable pleasant day experience.

Spotted Eels:

There are four transparent garden tanks nearby Water’s Blessing Ogasawara Tank as Reef flat, Coral cluster, Sand bottom in coral reef, and Coral cay.

If you arrive at the Sand bottom in coral reef tank, you’ll be surprised how the eels hide their bodies inside the sand, keeping their heads up. These cute spotted eels look like snakes.

According to the records, the aquarium brought 634 spotted garden eels after the height of the Tokyo Sky Tree.

Sumida Aquarium keeps Fur seal tunnel and penguin pool together on the fifth floor. Visitors can enjoy it from the sixth floor and take lovely photo shoots.

The Penguin Pool is the biggest indoor open tank in Japan, designed to allow visitors to experience the Penguins and Fur Seals’ lifestyle as close as possible and even feel their breaths.

Sumida Aquarium goldfish exhibition zone name is Edorium, displays more than 20 different species with 1,000 goldfish. Visitors can understand it from afar by seeing its roof with colorful goldfish lighting images.

You can enjoy original drinks at Penguin Cafe, but if you visit at night, you can even enjoy the aquarium sipping an alcoholic drink.

Sofa:

The aquarium floor is clean and comfortable to walk. The fifth and sixth floors have several benches and sofas.

However, the sixth floors sofas made the aquarium feel like home for visitors. People can sit comfortably and watch around. Besides, it’s unbelievably neat and clean.

Aquarium has a gift shop with a variety of aquatic souvenirs. The gift shop sells penguins, turtles, sea lions, fish, and Japanese sweets.

Surroundings:

Solamachi Skytree Town has several exciting venues to visit. You can go to Skytree decks to see beautiful Tokyo from Tokyo Skytree Tembo Deck and Tembo Galleria.
