Location:

The Ueno Royal Museum is located on the eastern side of Ueno Park, Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo. It is only a few steps north of the statue of Saigo Takamori.

The barrier-free access from Ueno Station takes only three minutes on foot.

Ueno Park is one of Tokyo’s most important tourist places, where several famous tourist sites are located.

Some of the famous museums at Ueno Park are the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Museum of Nature and Science, Kuroda Museum Hall, and National Museum of Western Art,  

Besides, Ueno Zoo, Ueno Ameyoko Shopping Street, Toshugu Shrine, and Shinabzu Bentendo Temple are located here.

History:

Ueno Royal Museum was opened in April 1972. Japan Art Association, an association with a history of starting in 1879, manages the museum, considered the oldest art association in Japan.

As the name is related to the Royal family, sometimes, some Royal family members get involved with the museum activities.

What to do here:

The Ueno Royal Museum does not have permanent collections, but it manages some good temporary exhibitions.

In addition, it also hosts prestigious exhibitions from overseas. Furthermore, the Ueno Royal Museum holds regular special exhibitions in various artistic genres.

However, the museum holds some great annual exhibitions every year since 1994, which are mentioned below- 

  • Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition, 
  • Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition, 
  • Vision of Contemporary Art(VOCA) exhibition,  

Check the official Ueno Royal Museum website. Though Ueno Royal Museum is a relatively small attraction in Ueno, this museum can easily be included in a tour of Ueno Park’s other major museums, and sometimes the exhibitions are free.

Cafe:

The museum has a cafe facility inside. The cafe serves good quality coffee, tea, soft drinks, ice cream, and light desserts.

Coffee or tea is about 600 yen. However, coffee or tea with a cake is about 1000 yen.

Small Art Shop:

Besides, a shop sells art-related postcards and art books from current and past exhibitions, where visitors can buy beautiful postcards to bring back home.

However, the cafe and shop are only open during exhibitions between 10.00 and 16.45.

On event-basis

It depends on each exhibition. Sometimes, some exhibitions are admission-free entries.

Opening hour:

10:00-17:00

Last entry 16:30. However, it may change depending on the event.

Closing day is not fixed, and it has a few irregular closing days.
