How to Get to Owakudani from Hakone-Yumoto Station?

Owakudani is one of Hakone’s most iconic destinations, renowned for its geothermal landscapes, steaming vents, and breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. If you’re traveling from Hakone-Yumoto Station, my guide will provide you with all the transportation options.

1. Scenic Route: Train, Cable Car, and Ropeway:

You can access Owakudani from Hakone-Yumoto Station via train, cable car, and ropeway. This is the best route and offers scenic views with a smooth journey that visitors enjoy most.

a) Take the Hakone Tozan Train:

  • Route: Board the Hakone Tozan Train at Hakone-Yumoto Station and ride to Gora Station.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 40 minutes.
  • Fare: Around 410 JPY.

Note:  The train winds through lush mountain scenery with beautiful views of nature.

b) Board the Hakone Cable Car:

  • Route: From Gora Station, transfer to the Hakone Cable Car to Sounzan Station.
  • Travel Time: About 10 minutes.
  • Fare: Around 420 JPY.
  • Tip: The cable car provides a fun ride with great views of the surrounding landscape.

c) Take the Hakone Ropeway:

  • Route: At Sounzan Station, board the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani Station.
  • Travel Time: About 10 minutes.
  • Fare: Around 1,500 JPY (one way).
  • Highlights: Enjoy panoramic views of the steaming Owakudani Valley and Mount Fuji on clear days.

Note: Wear comfortable shoes and be ready for some sulfuric smells due to the geothermal activity.

2. Direct Option: Hakone Tozan Bus:

The Hakone Tozan Bus is a great choice for a straightforward and time-efficient option.

  • Route: From Hakone-Yumoto Station, take the Hakone Tozan Bus (Route H) bound for Togendai and get off at Owakudani Stop.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 50 minutes.
  • Fare: Around 1,000 JPY (one way).
  • Tip: This is good for those who want to skip transfers and reach Owakudani directly.

3. By Car:

Hiring a taxi or car is another option if you prefer flexibility. Usually, people choose trains, cable cars, and ropeway to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

  • Route: From Hakone-Yumoto, drive along the Hakone Turnpike and Route 734 to Owakudani.
  • Travel Time: Around 30-40 minutes.
  • Parking: Parking is available at Owakudani.
