If you are planning a visit to Nagasaki and looking for an experience that perfectly blends stunning natural beauty, modern convenience, and unforgettable memories. In that case, the Mount Inasayama Ropeway (locally known as the Nagasaki Ropeway) is an absolute must-see. From the moment you step onto this world-class cable car, you will be transported to a magical vantage point that showcases why Nagasaki is one of Japan’s most picturesque cities.
Ropeway Adventure:
The Nagasaki Ropeway operates from Fuchi Shrine Station at the base to Inasadake Station at the summit. In just a five-minute ride, this scenic Ropeway will drop you to the top of the 333-meter-high peak of Mount Inasa (Inasayama), which is exactly the same height as Tokyo Tower.
This high peak offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding beautiful islands. The gondolas are modern, spacious, and designed to maximize your viewing experience. Whether it’s the soft hues of sunset or the glittering city lights after dark, each ride is a feast for the senses.
Ropeway Ticket Information:
The gondolas depart every 15-20 minutes from Fuchi Shrine Station. If you take a taxi from Nagasaki Station, as soon as you get off, you will see a red Torri gate and go through it.
After a few steps, you will find stairs to the Fuchi Shrine but do not stop there. Go straight, and you will see the Nagasaki Ropeway Ticket Counter.
Adult: Roundtrip fare: ¥1,250
Children: Roundtrip fare: ¥ 940
Operating hours: 9:00-22:00
A free shuttle bus runs from 7:00 to 10:00 PM from several hotels, ensuring an effortless journey to the ropeway station. You will find out on the official website, which I linked below.
Japan’s Top 3 Breathtaking Views:
Mount Inasa’s summit is renowned for offering one of Japan’s top three night views alongside the iconic vistas from Mount Hakodate (Hokkaido) and Mount Maya (Kobe).
However, you cannot wait till night; still, you will enjoy the stunning views of the surroundings.
Observation Deck:
The highlight at the summit is the Mount Inasa Observatory, a free, spacious platform that offers breathtaking 360-degree views. By day, the sight of Nagasaki’s sprawling cityscape, lush mountains, and the shimmering sea captivates visitors.
You will feel you are flying over the lovely green mountain.
Besides, on clear days, you can even spot the majestic Unzen, Amakusa, and the Goto Islands in the distance. As night falls, the city transforms into a glittering tapestry of lights, earning it the nickname “the ten-million-dollar view.”
So, why miss such a precious view while you are in Nagasaki? You can view it for free.
Relaxing with a View:
At the top of Mount Inasa, the Inasayama Observatory Tower has restaurants where you can enjoy hot coffee, tea, ice cream, drinks, and tasty food.
The restaurants have a romantic vibe. The ground floor is decorated with colorful umbrellas, creating a cheerful atmosphere. At night, the area glows with beautiful lights.
Imagine drinking the best coffee while relaxing with the illuminated cityscape as your backdrop—a truly unforgettable experience.
How to Get There?
There are a few options to access. However, it depends on how you plan your visit. I am leaving all the options open for you so that you can decide.
By Ropeway:
The Nagasaki Ropeway is the easiest and most scenic option. Besides, it takes you directly to the top. From downtown Nagasaki, a short walk, taxi ride, or the free evening shuttle bus will bring you to Fuchi Shrine Station, ensuring a stress-free journey.
By Bus and Foot:
You can take Bus No. 5 from Nagasaki Station to the Inasayama Park Bus Stop. From there, it is a 15-minute uphill walk to the observation deck.
Slope Car:
If walking is difficult for you, you can take a Slope Car.It is like a small monorail train that offers a convenient ride from the parking lot to the summit for ¥500 roundtrip.
I enjoy Ropeway. Honestly, I enjoyed Slope Car in Inasayam Park more than Ropeway. The view from the Slope Car we enjoy cannot be seen from the Ropeway.
By Car or Taxi:
For those driving, Inasayama Park has enough free parking spaces. You can take your own car or take a taxi.
Why Not Miss It?
1. World-Class Night Views: The nighttime view from Inasayama Observatory is one of Japan’s top three, offering an unforgettable panorama of Nagasaki’s glittering cityscape. For a special memory, a professional photographer is available at the Observatory to capture your visit. It costs only 550 yen per person. You can receive your photos by email. It is a great way to take home a piece of this incredible experience!
2. Accessibility: As I mentioned above, there are multiple access options. You can take Ropeway, a slope car, or just climb up slowly to reach the Observatory. However, taking a Ropeway or Slope Car is better for reaching the summit effortlessly.
3. Varied Experiences: You will love it; whether you are a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or just seeking tranquility, Mount Inasa surprises you.
4. All-Season Beauty: The view changes with the seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and serene snow-capped peaks in winter.

Bring a Jacket: Even in warmer months, the mountaintop can get chilly, especially in the evening.
Photography Gear: Whether it’s a professional camera or a smartphone, the vistas demand to be captured. Honestly, I cannot stop taking photos here.

I have good information for y u. Inasayama is not only for adults to enjoy nature and panoramic views but also a fun place for children.
If so, you should take a one-way Slop Car and come down using Ropeway. Then, your kids can enjoy the playground, fountain Square, and Kusa Ski Area.
Besides, Inasayama Park has a monkey house, deer posture, and a small stage where kids can have fun.
Recommendation: Inasayama Park is one of the must-visit tourist spots in Nagasaki. The Observatory, located within the park, is completely free. It offers breathtaking views, both during the day and at night.
